FIT participates in Smart City Expo for the first time (from 14 to 16 November)

For the first time, Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) is participating in the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. It will be doing so in collaboration with its structural partner DSP Valley and fellow trade organizations AWEX and Brussels Invest & Export. From 14 to 16 November, the Smart City Expo brings together worldwide industry players offering smart solutions to tackle the (urban) challenges of tomorrow – specifically in terms of mobility, energy, safety and efficiency.

A total of ten Flanders-based companies and institutes will be represented at FIT’s booth at Smart City Expo: Acceleran, DSP Valley, HOPLR, Hydroscan, imec, Living Tomorrow, Locate in Limburg, LRD/KU Leuven, Rombouts Holding (Rombit) & Settlemint. Each of these participants will present innovative technological applications that can help improve the quality of life in urban environments, ranging from digital communication platforms to mobile applications.

Smart Cities in a Smart Region

In addition, the FIT stand will host representatives of Antwerp and Ghent. These cities come together under the moniker ‘Smart Cities in a Smart Region’. On 14 and 15 November, an official delegation of the Smart Flanders support program will visit Smart City Expo, bringing together representatives of Flanders’ 13 main cities – referred to as ‘centrumsteden’ or ‘central cities’. The delegation is led by imec, Flanders’ strategic research center for nanotechnology and digital innovation.

Marc Van Gastel, Head of Department Invest, which represents FIT at Smart City Expo: “Together with DSP Valley and other partner organizations, FIT focuses heavily on the digital revolution and the Internet of Things. Taking part in the Smart City congress, which is a first for our organization, is the logical next step for us. Flanders has a lot to offer in terms of smart city applications. Cities such as Antwerp and Ghent, for example, are making strong headway in this respect. We will therefore utilize our presence at Smart City Expo to the fullest: to put companies from Flanders in the limelight, but also to engage with potential foreign investors and partners.”

From B2B matchmaking to smart city workshop

In the context of this trade fair participation, FIT, DSP Valley and the Smart Flanders delegation will also organize several additional activities. These include the B2B Matchmaking Event, in collaboration with Enterprise Europe Network, as well as the SmartCity Tech workshop in collaboration with a range of international partner organizations.
