LH2ORA (VITO): smart metering for durable water consumption

One of VITO’s prominent IoT initiatives is the LH2ORA project. Together with Vlakwa (Flanders’ water knowledge center), ETRO (VUB Department of Electronics & Informatics), water company De Watergroep, IoT provider Actilit Benelux and tech startup Snaptronic, VITO is testing the impact of data communication between smart meters and water quality sensors in both industrial and residential applications.

Communicating conduits for water management

Historically, it has been almost impossible to connect wireless data communication systems to water pipes, as the setup would require too much energy. The LoRa-technology for long range data transmission, however, consumes almost no power, making it excellent for sustainable, large-scale networks.

Smart sensors and meters are hooked up to the central system via this radiotechnology. The LH2ORA project is a test case for both the wireless and automatic detection of leaks and the automatic management of water distribution in case of water scarcity.
