Working in Belgium & Flanders: smoother with digital tool

With the new digital platform “Working in Belgium”, the federal government of Belgium and the government of Flanders – the country’s northern region – make it easier, simpler and faster for foreign talent to start working in Belgium and Flanders via a smoother application process. Thanks to the platform, getting a ‘single permit’ to work and live in Flanders takes 2 to 4 weeks.

A smoother, digital application

To put Belgium and Flanders further on the map as an attractive place to live and work for highly educated talent from outside the EU, a new digital application experience has been put into place. After the 2019 introduction of a single permit for living and working in Belgium and Flanders, the application process has now been made even smoother thanks to the brand-new ‘Working in Belgium’ platform.

Flanders is a knowledge region par excellence. It remains important to continue to attract top international talent and to make it as easy as possible for them to get started here. With the new digital platform, we are once again taking major steps forward to ensure that this happens smoothly.

2 to 4 weeks

To make the application process as smooth as possible, single permits need to be both easy to apply for and to be delivered quickly. With the new ‘Working in Belgium’ digital platform, everything can be processed completely digitally, which results in a fluid experience that takes 2 to 4 weeks, instead of 8. Aspiring employees will be able to complete the entire process digitally, without any delays.

Employers can easily submit applications via the ‘Working in Belgium’ platform as well. Once the Economic Migration Department has checked whether the requirements are met, the employer is digitally notified.

Employers will be able to track the status of their applications. But even after the permit has been delivered, applicant friendliness must continue. It is important for foreign employees to feel welcome here in Flanders. We ensure that by providing them with further guidance.

An attractive region to work in

As Belgium’s northern region, Flanders offers an attractive working and living environment for highly educated professionals (and their families) – an environment that can easily compete with major European cities like London and Berlin.

As such, Flanders:

  • is located in the heart of Europe, making it easy and fast for expat workers to discover Europe’s major cities from Flanders in no time;
