VUB scientist in Forbes’ 30 under 30 Europe list

Wim Thiery, a climate scientist at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), grabbed a spot on the list of the 30 most important young innovators in Europe, published by American financial magazine Forbes. Thiery examines the influence of irrigation on extreme weather phenomena.

Battling climate change

“The widespread irrigation and limited adaptational possibilities of local populations in developing countries can cause climate change and water shortage to have a disastrous impact on people’s lives,” Thiery explains. “Scientific research is a fundamental step in reducing those effects. I’m therefore thoroughly convinced of the need to perform climate research and am extremely motivated to contribute to it myself.”

Lists of Europe’s finest

Every year, Forbes compiles lists of 30 of Europe’s leading innovators under 30 in 10 different categories, such as science and health care, arts, finance and technology. The result: an overview of the 300 most promising young talents in Europe.
