"Slush has grown from a two-day festival to a full week with side events," explains Hanna Tuohino, who represents Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) in Finland. One of these events was organized by FIT Finland and Flanders’ public broadcaster VRT. "With VRT Sandbox, VRT has succeeded in accelerating innovation in the media sector and setting up a network of media companies that stimulate innovation with media technology," says Tuohino.

VRT Sandbox draws the eye at Finnish tech festival Slush
The event of FIT and VRT focused on collaboration between start-ups, broadcasters and investors in the media. To meet the challenges of the modern media landscape, European public service broadcasters are working together more and more, experimenting with technology such as artificial intelligence, intelligent loudspeakers, social media and production automation software.
To this end, VRT set up the European Sandbox Hub partnership. "The goal is to exchange technology, set up collaborations and help start-ups grow," says Sarah Geeroms, who founded and runs the Sandbox Hub and establishes strategic partnerships with global partners.
VRT Sandbox is one of the eighteen members of the Sandbox Hub, an international network of accelerators for media innovation, which Geeroms founded with funding from MediaRoad, a recently completed project affiliated with the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.
