Vopak (NL) to focus on green energy in Antwerp (Flanders)

Vopak, a Dutch specialist in the storage and handling of chemical and oil products, is acquiring a site in the Antwerp port area of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Flanders. Together with the port, the Dutch company is looking at rolling out activities that focus on green energy and the energy transition.

Sustainable redevelopment

Vopak says it wants to “sustainably redevelop the Antwerp site” and contribute to the “decarbonization of the industrial cluster” that calls the Port of Antwerp-Bruges home.

The large size of the Flanders-based site, its strategic location and its connectivity to Northwest Europe offer unparalleled opportunities.

Green energy hub in the making

Vopak’s strategy consists of expanding its activities related to liquefied natural and petroleum gas (LNG and LPG) and renewable energy. Its focus is primarily on renewable hydrogen (and related products like green ammonia), decarbonization, sustainable feedstock and long-term energy storage.

This fits in perfectly with the ambition of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges to put itself on the map as a green energy hub. Some of the major industrial companies located at the port – including BASF, TotalEnergies, Air Liquide, Borealis, ExxonMobil and INEOS – have plans to reduce carbon emissions by replacing fossil fuels with new green energy carriers, potentially coupled with carbon capture, storage and recovery.
