Volkswagen to build Audi A3 at Vorst

The Volkswagen plant at Vorst, in the Brussels Region, will begin building the Audi A3 three-door car from the middle of next year. The plant will produce 30,000 A3s in 2004 and double that number in 2005.

Production of the Lupo three-liter and Lupo GTi will also be passed to Vorst from next month, meaning that the plant will be the only Volkswagen facility producing the Lupo.

Vorst is a major VW Golf builder and last year produced 228,003 Golfs and Lupos. On January 23 this year it celebrated the roll-out of the six millionth Golf produced at the plant and is now producing Volkswagen’s new Golf 5 model.

With the platform system in place, Vorst will be capable of turning out the VW Golf, the VW Bora, the Seat Leon, the Seat Toledo, the Skoda Octavia, the VW Lupo and soon the Audi A3.

The Vorst facility has an ongoing investment program of 0.5 billion euro for the period 2002 to 2007. This includes major investments in the body shop, assembly line and automotive park.
