Twipe & Kipco-Damaco win Flanders’ 2022 Export Lion Awards

At the 21st edition of the Export Lion Awards, Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) crowned 2 export champions from Flanders: Twipe Mobile Solutions and Kipco-Damaco. Tech company Twipe Mobile Solutions is dedicated to supporting news media in their digital transformation, while mechanically separated poultry meat producer Kipco-Damaco was already working circularly before it became a hot topic. What ties these two winners together? Both their stories demonstrate how Flanders provides a strong backbone for international trade and business success.

Strong performances across the board

In the “Companies with up to 49 employees” category, Twipe Mobile Solutions – headquartered in the town of Heverlee – prevailed over Diest-based food producer Belkorn and Leuven-based XenomatiX. Meanwhile, in the category “Companies with 50 or more employees”, Kipco-Damaco (Oostrozebeke) won from fellow nominees Bogaerts Greenhouse Logistics (Hoogstraten) and Lambo Laboratories (Wijnegem).

Congratulations to Twipe Mobile Solutions and Kipco-Damaco, our 2022 Export Lions! It’s impressive how both companies are blazing a brilliant export trail with an innovative, courageous and persevering mindset. But let’s not forget the achievements of nominees Belkorn, XenomatiX, Bogaerts Greenhouse Logistics and Lambo Laboratories. They, too, have excellent track records.

Twipe Mobile Solutions, at home at international news brands

Twipe Mobile Solutions, a digital tech player from Heverlee, provides software to 80+ newspapers in 13 countries: from Le Monde to The Telegraph and The Daily Mail. The company’s SaaS application enables readers to browse digital newspapers in a user-friendly way on web browsers and mobile apps. The technology also enables publishers to monitor reading behavior and offer readers customized news selections.

Over the next few years, we want to build a tech scale-up that’s poised to play in the Champions League of the news industry.

Danny Lein
CEO of Twipe Mobile Solutions

Together with The Times, Twipe Mobile Solutions also developed JAMES, a digital butler that uses AI to create personalized reading lists for subscribers. For this innovative development, the company received a substantial innovation subsidy from Google. JAMES also opened the door for export to Scandinavia, among others.

Besides Scandinavia, Twipe Mobile Solutions is active in Flanders’ neighboring countries, Italy, the UK and the US, accounting for a 92% share of its turnover. In addition to developing software, the company positions itself as a thought leader within its niche by participating in scientific research projects, for example. In the coming years, it will focus on further growth in the US, the UK and the German media landscape.

Kipco-Damaco, global player dedicated to the circular economy

Kipco-Damaco not only rules the roost in food production and exports; the Oostrozebeke-based company can now also call itself an Export Lion in the category “Companies with 50 or more employees”. In addition to producing mechanically separated poultry meat for further processing into products such as frankfurter sausages and deep-fry nuggets, Kipco-Damaco also supplies frozen vegetables, meat, fish and fries for the retail and food services segments. Moreover, the company recovers by-products from poultry production and processes them into functional building blocks for aquaculture and nutrient and animal feed producers.

Our motto is ‘dare, do and keep going’.

Iris Vandaele
co-owner and commercial & marketing director at Kipco-Damaco

With 83% of its turnover coming from exports, Kipco-Damaco has established its own network of sales offices in Singapore, Brazil, India, China, Vietnam and other countries. Kipco-Damaco also uses its sales offices’ local market knowledge and specialized know-how to evaluate its customers’ processes. The goal is to pinpoint how they can optimize their processing or organize cost-efficient transport, for instance.

Meanwhile, Kipco-Damaco continues to go the extra mile and push forward. In the coming years, to give just one example, the company mainly aims to further develop its sales in Africa and Latin America.

About the competition

On 8 June 2022, 3 nominees for each of the 2 Export Lion Awards categories were chosen from 30 applications. The jury based its verdict on export turnover figures, geographical diversification, the main strategic pillars of the companies’ export policies, corporate social responsibility and innovative strength. These 6 nominees then presented their competition dossier to a final jury on 7 September. This is also where the final decision was made on who would win the Export Lion Awards.
