TotalEnergies joins the battery frenzy in Flanders

French energy company TotalEnergies is set to build a large “battery park” next to its existing refinery in Antwerp. As such, the brand-new battery storage power station will be located at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Flanders’ leading and Europe’s second-largest seaport.

The equivalent of 10,000 households

Several developers and energy companies, including Engie, Eneco, Storm and Centrica, have already expressed ambitions to construct large battery storage power stations in Belgium and Flanders as a region. TotalEnergies is now joining the trend.

The French energy giant revealed plans for a 25-megawatt battery storage power station at its Antwerp oil refinery. With a total capacity of up to 75 megawatt-hours, TotalEnergies confirms that the battery project will be able to store enough power to supply electricity to 10,000 households for a day.

The group's largest in Europe

For TotalEnergies, which also has four battery projects underway in France, the Antwerp installation will become its largest in Europe. The latest project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

This battery storage project, our first in Flanders, will help stabilize the Belgian and European electricity grid and enable further growth of renewable energy.

A growing trend in Flanders

As many energy players increasingly require flexible storage capacity, large battery storage power stations are springing up rapidly in Belgium and Flanders as a region. In total, more than 1.3 gigawatts of worth local battery storage projects have recently been announced, according to figures from business newspaper De Tijd.
