Software AG (DE) acquires big data scale-up Trendminer (BE)

German listed IT company Software AG acquires successful Flanders-based scale-up Trendminer. In recent years, Software AG has completed various other big data acquisitions as well to strengthen its Internet of Things offering.

Worldwide IoT player

By acquiring Trendminer, Software AG aims to strengthen its position in the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 markets. Likewise, the acquisition will enable Trendminer to further build on its worldwide market leader position in big data analysis.

With its world-renowned education system, a Capital of Things in Antwerp and world-leading R&D and innovation hub imec, Flanders has a lot to offer in the domain of IoT and Industry 4.0. But Flanders is also interesting from a market perspective: smart cities, life sciences and logistics are only some of the IoT application areas Flanders has to offer.

Flanders-based ‘Google of the industry’

Founded in 2012 in Flanders, Trendminer has a turnover of EUR 6 million and operates offices in Houston, New York, Cologne and Hasselt (Flanders). The company provide a digital software platform for the chemical industry, oil and gas, mining, and other industries. In fact, half of the top 50 chemical companies in the world – think of Evonik, Exxon, Total, BASF, and Bayer – are already using Trendminer. Various leading pharma companies, like Pfizer and industrial firms, such as Umicore and Anglo American, are also part of the scale-up’s client base. Companies in these sectors generate large amounts of big data. That’s where Trendminer comes in as the ultimate search engine.

The port of Antwerp

Being the second largest chemical hub in the world, the port of Antwerp played an important role in Trendminer’s success story.

“In one chemical installation in the port of Antwerp, you can already find up to 500,000 sensors that measure temperature, pressure, the flowrate, and so on. Thanks to our software, analysts can indicate, label, analyze and monitor all this big data. Antwerp gave us the opportunity to grow and expand our offering to other big chemical plants around the world.” – Bert Baeck, CEO and co-founder of Trendminer.
