Puratos (Flanders) launches food tech venture Sparkalis

Puratos (Flanders), international manufacturer of ingredients for the bakery, patisserie and chocolate domain, has aimed to simplify the lives of bakers and confectioners since 1919. Now, it is launching the Sparkalis venture fund – the first global food tech venture of its kind – to help start-ups and SMEs in bringing their sustainable food tech ideas to life. These companies often lack the support needed to transform their innovations into scalable products. Sparkalis will support young entrepreneurs with direct investments backed by Puratos’ century of experience in food tech.

A spark of creativity

The name Sparkalis was chosen because its goal is to be the spark that enables a great idea to become reality. Sparkalis will be a start-up incubator and will also make direct investments. Its goal is to make baked goods healthier and more sustainable. Innovations in plant-based products, fermentation and digitalization are some concrete examples of where the investments will land.

Youthful enthusiasm meets expertise

A global network of nearly 100 experts will assess projects and mentor start-ups. Each young business will receive a dedicated Puratos specialist, who will concern themselves with maximizing its chances of success. Sparkalis will take a holistic approach by helping the entrepreneurs with everything ranging from product development to regulatory support. Puratos will also grant participants access to its Taste Tomorrow research program, which provides insights into global and local consumer behavior when it comes to bakery, patisserie and chocolate products.

Sparkalis is looking for the future changemakers among start-ups in the bakery, patisserie and chocolate subsegments. Our global experts, each with their own professional background, are excited to transform their visions into successful business realities. This venture provides the perfect breeding ground for the next big innovation in food while offering Puratos’ considerable R&D capabilities, network and consumer understanding.

A history of innovative ambition

Puratos was founded in 1919 with the goal of advancing bakery and confectionery technology. Recently, Puratos also launched Bakeronline, a platform that enables bakers to easily create their own personalized web shops. By establishing Sparkalis, the company demonstrates that it has never lost touch with its entrepreneurial identity.
