Port of Ostend launches link with Killingholme
Thanks to the new route, the whole of the United Kingdom can now be covered by truck from Ostend, with the short-distance link to Ramsgate, the medium-distance link to Ipswich and the long-distance link to Killingholme.
The new route is also an extra asset to attract logistics and distribution businesses to Plassendale. As Ostend is on the sea, it has to offer a good corridor to the other side in order to enjoy a central economic positioning. The new line achieves just this. A number of contacts are already in progress with logistics businesses interested in establishing a base in Plassendale, from where they can serve the UK, Northern France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Last year, the port of Ostend transshipped nearly 160,000 roro units. It is expected that the new service will ship around 30,000 units per year. Together with the growth of the other roro lines (to Ramsgate and Ipswich), the port thus expects that by 2002 close on 200,000 units per year will be shipped via Ostend.
