Pfizer (US) continues to grow its workforce in Flanders

American pharmaceutical frontrunner Pfizer is looking for no fewer than 100 highly-skilled technicians at is site in Puurs, Flanders. As such, the company has actually hired more than 1,000 new employees in the region, and continues to expand what already is Pfizer’s largest production site in Europe.

Talent pool

Pfizer’s employment rate in Flanders is impressive, to say the least. In 2010, the company had 1,237 working in Puurs. Today, this figure is up by around 900, reaching 2,100 in total. “If you also count the number of replacements of people that have left the company, we have actually hired more than 1,000 people over the past 6 years,” explains Jan Beumer, HR Director at Pfizer in Puurs.

“In March 2017, we started looking for 100 new employees,” Beumer continues. “These not only included technical profiles, but also managers, project engineers, pharmacists and laboratory researchers and technicians. Today, we’ve found all this talent, but we are looking for yet another 100 people. This time, we’re mainly searching technicians with degrees in electromechanics, technical maintenance and automation.”

Largest of its kind

Pfizer’s production site in Flanders is the company’s largest in Europe. “And we continue to expand,” Beumer adds. “In 2015, for instance, we opened a brand-new facility in Puurs for the production of vaccines against pneumococcus. These are shipped from Flanders to developing countries around the globe.”

“For years now,” Beumer continues, “our American headquarters have known that we are capable of successfully setting up a new factory, and that the local workforce is talented and highly-skilled. That’s why we manage to attract so many projects to the Puurs production hub.

World-leading industry

It’s thanks to the presence of big pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and Sanofi, Flanders is known worldwide for its top-notch pharmaceutical industry. In fact, Belgium as a whole is the world’s 2nd-biggest exporter of pharma products—with the autonomous region of Flanders accounting for over 80% of the country’s total exports.
