New Terneuzen lock gives Port of Ghent a bright future

In 2022, the first ship will power through the new sea lock in Terneuzen towards the Port of Ghent in Flanders. The first cubic meter of land was excavated by Ben Weyts, Flanders’ Minister of Mobility and Public Works. “The new lock ensures a bright future for us,” says Daan Schalk, CEO at the Port of Ghent.

The new sea lock between Terneuzen and the Port of Ghent totals an investment of EUR 850 million.

From “well done” to future-proof

During the construction kick-off, port alderman Mathias De Clercq quoted the words of his predecessor Geeraard Van Den Daele, who officially inaugurated the current lock complex in Terneuzen in 1968: “‘Well done,’ he said at the time, ‘but it's going to be too small.’ Today, almost fifty years later, we are making the necessary preparations for the future.”

Once finished, the new lock complex will ensure that the Port of Ghent, one of Flanders’ main seaports, remains an attractive location for a range of industries and keeps serving as a major multimodal connection to the European hinterland. As such, the maximum width of the Terneuzen lock will be expanded from 36 to 49 meters, and the lock will reach a depth of 16 meters.

Historical and ambitious

A gigantic construction yard will be built in Terneuzen. “At certain moments, 500 people will be working at the same time," said Minister Ben Weyts during the construction kick-off before entering the excavator. “This is a historical project: Ghent and Flanders will have a new gateway that fits our ambitions.”

The revamped and improved sea lock complex between Terneuzen and the Port of Ghent totals an investment of EUR 850 million, most of which is provided by the government of Flanders.
