New science park in Ostend to drive Flanders’ blue economy

The government of Flanders has sold industrial zone Plassendale 1 to POM West Flanders, AG Havenbedrijf Oostende and Ghent University. Together, these partners will be setting up a new blue economy science park at the Ostend site. Their aim is to work on sustainable, environmentally friendly business models.

Pioneering research

Partners of the new science park will both strengthen the position of maritime scientific research in Flanders and boost the development of the port area by conducting pioneering research into the influence of waves, tides and wind on ships and other objects in the sea. The research center also offers opportunities to large and small companies to become blue economy innovators.

The blue heart of Flanders

“The marine and maritime sector employs 46,000 people in Flanders and contributes added value of EUR 26 billion to our economy,” says Geert Bourgeois, minister-president of Flanders. “With the North Sea as our western border, establishing a blue economy will prove to be a valuable asset. We aim to fortify Flanders’ position as an international frontrunner in this field.
