New institute for brain research opens in Flanders

KU Leuven, one of Flanders’ five universities, has recently opened a brand-new research center, called the Leuven Brain Institute (LBI). It will bring together numerous scientists from various university departments to initiate new collaborations with the goal of deepening our knowledge of the human nervous system.

Neuroscientific challenges

“It’s important to create a meeting place where scientists can come together and new ideas can take form,” says neurophysiologist Peter Janssen, who has been appointed chairman of LBI. “Initially, the new research center will be focusing on themes that address the main challenges of neuroscience in today’s context.”

Tying disciplines together

“There’s no fixed way of conducting brain research,” Janssen adds. “You’ll always need to combine various disciplines. Basic life sciences research into the workings of the brain and the development of brain disease is required, but you’ll also need to explore new ways of developing medical systems for brain monitoring, treatment, patient care, etc. At LBI, we want to bring all these disciplines together, along with the researchers who dedicate their time and efforts to these fields of study.”
