Latin American AGP opens hi-tech plant in Ghent (Flanders)

Latin American automotive glass manufacturing AGP recently opened one of its most advanced plants around the globe – right here in Flanders. Finished just one year after the start of its construction, the new facility goes by the name of eGlass 2.0. The plant is based near the city of Ghent and features a fully automated production line for panoramic roofs with switchable glazing technologies and HUD windshields with lightweight compositions. This investment earned AGP the Newcomer of the Year Trophy at the 2019 Foreign Investment Trophy event in Flanders.

Back to Europe

As Latin American group, AGP’s European heritage – which started in Berlin over a century ago – is the driving force behind its current growth strategy. After many decades, the firm returned to Europe with two closely linked investments in Flanders: the acquisition of sector peer Soliver NV in 2018 and the opening of eGlass 2.0 in Ghent in 2019. This state-of-the-art production plant was designed to manufacture high-tech glass tailored for electric and autonomous vehicles.

One-of-a-kind facility

“In the last two weeks, AGP customers from around the globe have already visited our new plant in Flanders,” says Arturo Mannheim, CEO of AGP Group. “We truly managed to capture their attention with the amount of technology incorporated in eGlass 2.0, making it a one-of-a-kind facility in our industry.”

“The scale of production and level of automation at the new, Ghent-based plant – which does not require any human interaction with the product along the line – will allow us to commercialize more affordable switchable exterior glass. Our goal is to accelerate the introduction of this technology within the entire automotive industry.  To top it all off, eGlass 2.0 also enables us to manufacture lightweight coated glass in order to increase the driving range of electric vehicles.”

High-tech glass

By focusing on innovation and customer centricity, AGP has been able to rapidly develop high-end technologies in order to meet rising demand in electrification, connectivity, shared mobility and autonomous driving. With its new 40,000-m² facility, the company will be able to produce an estimated 3,000,000 m² of glass per year. In addition to being high tech, the produced glass will come in large and complex shapes up to 4.5 m², feature switchable glass technologies and lightweight compositions, and incorporate aluminosilicate glass, coated products and more.
