LANXESS invests in 2nd N2O reduction plant in Flanders

As a global leader in the field of specialty chemicals, LANXESS puts the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions high on its priority list. Aiming to go fully climate neutral by 2040, the German company has already invested about EUR 40 million in improving the sustainability of its operations at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Flanders. And that’s just in the past 2 years. The most recent project is a new nitrous oxide (N2O) reduction plant, its second in Flanders.

Taking responsibility

LANXESS has two production sites at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Flanders. At its site in Lillo, the specialty chemicals company produces the semi-finished products caprolactam and polyamide, while its Kallo site manufactures fiberglass and rubber chemicals. In fact, the two Flanders-based sites are at the heart of LANXESS' international activities in high-tech plastics.

With a second N2O reduction plant at its site in Lillo, the German company is investing yet another EUR 13 million towards improving the sustainability of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges’ region, Europe’s largest integrated petrochemical cluster. The plant should be fully operational in 2023 – only two years after the first installation was inaugurated

These successive investments in N2O reduction plants in Flanders illustrate that LANXESS takes responsibility for its local branches. As such, sustainable and innovative projects are key to protecting the environment.

Greenhouse gas reductions

The special plant will take the company’s efforts to cut nitrous oxide emissions to the next level. The first N2O-reducing installation already accounted for annual reductions equivalent to 150,000 tons of CO2 – this second one will have emissions drop by an additional 300,000 tons per year

Designed in Flanders, the plant will not only neutralize nitrous oxide. Its energy usage will also be reduced to the maximum extent through heat recovery.

Going all out on sustainability

LANXESS’ drive to make its production sites in Flanders safe and sustainable also shows in the company’s recent modernization of the water treatment plants at both the Lillo and Kallo sites. For example, some EUR 12 million was invested to expand the installation in Kallo and give it a technological revamp. Now, the plant has a treatment capacity of around 260,000 liters of wastewater per hour.

Adding up all the company’s investments in environmental technology and sustainability solutions in Flanders in the past two years gives us an impressive total of EUR 40 million.
