Inland waterway traffic rises

Inland waterway transport in Flanders grew 4.4% last year, according to the Flemish inland waterway promotion agency PBV. Container traffic in particular showed strong growth with a rise of 8.1% in ton/kilometers.

The rise in inland waterway transport has not, however, come at the expense of rail or road traffic. Rail transport saw a general rise of 3.1% in 2002 and a rise of 6% in container traffic, while the road transport federation says the general road trend is up.

The PBV points out that some 85% of companies in Flanders are sited within 16 kilometers of a waterway. There are seven inland waterway terminals in Flanders with an eighth due to start operations soon.
