Initiative aims to triple IT workforce

Fabrimetal, Belgium's largest employer federation, is coordinating an initiative aimed at achieving a threefold increase in the country's skilled IT workforce.

Business leaders from the banking and IT sectors are providing active support and a number of companies have offered their own IT experts to assist teachers in schools.

The plan is focused on four major goals: to create awareness among 12-to-14 year-olds about technology education; to increase the numbers of females in high-tech fields; to lower the drop-out rate of first-year students in information management; and to implement a new ICT education program at 30 sites around the country.

As an organization, Fabrimetal groups employers representing five sectors of the Belgian economy that together account for almost a third of the country's exports. It represents more than 1,130 companies employing a total of some 200,000 personnel.
