IMEC and Japanese STARC sign co-operation agreement.

During the visit to Japan of the Belgian official delegation, consisting of the Crown Prince, the Princess and 5 ministers, the Louvain-based research centre IMEC and the Japanese consortium of semiconductor manufacturers STARC, in presence of minister Gabriels, signed an agreement on co-operative development of new Systems-on-Chip design methods. These developments will be further elaborations of IMEC's OCAPI design environment.

The co-operation agreement is concluded for a 2-year period and is considered the start of a long-term co-operation. During the first stage, STARC will study IMEC's design methodology for Systems-on-Chip (OCAPI) in view of integrating it in their own design environment. During the second stage, IMEC and STARC will co-operatively develop new design methods based on the principle of sharing both costs and results. STARC sends a resident to IMEC for the 2-year period.

"Japan has a vast amount of technological expertise in the field of semiconductors and is thus a very attractive party to collaborate with", says Professor Gilbert Declerck, General Manager of IMEC. " For IMEC, in order to reinforce its position in Japan, this co-operation with the STARC consortium, which consists of 11 leading semiconductor companies, is an important step."

This agreement is in line with a trend within the semiconductor industry towards globalisation, i.e. co-operation between industry and research centres worldwide. Growing requirements for faster, cheaper and smaller systems with more functionality pose ever-higher demands on both production and design technologies. This creates a need for global partnerships.

IMEC collaborates worldwide with some 450 companies and institutions, among which various Japanese companies such as Sony, Hitachi, JSR, TEL, Hitachi Chemical, ASET and Selete.
