The new 25-megawatt battery park, named Ruien Energy Storage, will be ready by the beginning of 2020, although it will be possible to expand the project afterwards. It can be used to supply energy to Elia’s high-voltage grid in case of small shortages. Ruien Energy Storage will also store power from local energy production facilities, such as solar panels or wind turbines.

Former coal plant to become Belgium’s biggest battery park
Yuso chose the site in Ruien because of its strategic location and easy connection to Elia’s high-voltage grid, as well as its history. For over fifty years, Ruien was the home of one of Belgium’s largest coal-fired power stations. With the new battery park, the site is given a new purpose.
Currently, the largest battery park in Belgium is located in Dilsen-Stokkem in Limburg and capable of storing 18 megawatts of electricity. There, energy technology company Restore and Flanders-based investment company LRM assembled 140 Tesla batteries. In second place is Electrabel, with a test site close to its power plant in Drogenbos.
