Flemish designer puts final touches to Spiderman costumes

Stijn Helsen, a young Flemish fashion designer, is completing his work on the costumes for the second Spiderman film, due for release in May 2004.

“A task like this is in many ways comparable with what a fashion designer does,” Helsen told De Standaard newspaper. “Perfection and an eye for detail are also the most important criteria for a costume designer.”

The work for Spiderman in Los Angeles, however, involves an entire team of technical experts and began with the creation of a silicon muscle suit that perfectly matched the actor Toby Maguire’s stature. Some 50 of the Spiderman costumes will be made for the film.

Now aged 30, Stijn Helsen followed his grandfather and father into the design and fine tailoring business. He attended the Léon Mignon tailoring school in Belgium and then the Marangoni Institute in Italy.

Helsen creates his own winter and summer collections for men and women. He has also freelanced for Vivienne Westwood in London, designed a line of clothes for Joseph of London and worked for Valentino in Italy. The Spiderman assignment came to him through an agent in London.
