Flanders sets up creative economy institute

The Flanders regional government has established a creative economy institute, Kennislab (Knowledge Lab) Flanders DC, following on from a forum attended by nine of the world’s “creative economy” open network regions in the university city of Leuven earlier this year, De Tijd newspaper reports.

The Minister-President of Flanders, Bart Somers, and the Minister for Economy, Foreign Policy and E-Government, Patricia Ceysens, announced the move, saying that Flanders DC (District of Creativity) was tasked with making creativity the spearhead of the regional economy. It is aimed at raising the economic output of innovation and ideas, building an international network, coordinating a European project for inter-regional cooperation and organizing international meetings.

The establishment of the institute stems from a business conference and a report that emphasized the need for entrepreneurship, innovation and internationalization of the regional economy.

Delegates from nine of the world’s “creative economy” open network regions met with some 900 Flemish business people for the first international forum of Flanders District of Creativity in February this year. The regions were: Maryland (US), Shanghai (China), Baden-Württemberg (Germany), Catalonia (Spain), Lombardy (Italy), Quebec (Canada), Nord-Pas de Calais (France), Scotland (UK) and Karnataka (India).
