Flanders chemical co-siting promoted in Japan

Japan and Monsanto Antwerp co-organized a seminar in the residence of the Ambassador of Belgium in Tokyo on 5 March 2002. Main topic of the seminar was the new trend of co-siting and service sharing in the chemical sector in Europe and the role of Flanders in this. About 110 persons subscribed, of which 84 attended the seminar.

Mr. Shinjiro Sato, Staff Member of the Japan Chemical Daily, sketched the recent evolution of the chemical sector worldwide, and particularly in Europe. His presentation was fine-tuned to the situation in Flanders by Mr. Dirk De Ruyver, Business Development Director of FFIO Japan.

Mr. Hiroto Matsuo, Chairman of Kuraray Corporation, presented his company’s experience with co-siting and service sharing in Antwerp - Flanders, where Kuraray has been operating a chemical plant since 1999. Mr. Dave Lonsdale, New Business Development Manager of Monsanto Europe, and Mr. Ben Huybrechts, Managing Director of Whise Co., explained in detail the possibilities of co-siting and service sharing by Monsanto in Antwerp. Monsanto is operating a site of 105 hectares in Antwerp, of which 35 hectares have now been offered to other chemical investors.

Mr. Jan De Bock, Technology Investment Director of FFIO Japan, closed the seminar by introducing Flanders as a top investment location in Europe. The seminar was made possible thanks to the hospitality of the Belgian Ambassador in Tokyo, H.E. Ambassador Gustaaf Dierckx, who also gave the opening speech.

Monsanto Antwerp took advantage of its mission to Japan to strengthen its contacts with several Japanese chemical companies, hereby supported by FFIO Japan.
