Finland’s Paulig opens new tortilla factory in Flanders

On Friday 23 September 2022, Paulig’s brand-new tortilla factory officially opened its doors in Flanders. The inauguration marks an important milestone for the Finnish family-owned food company, which aims to meet the growing demand for Tex Mex products across Europe. The new factory was built next to Paulig’s existing facilities in Roeselare, West Flanders. Worth a whopping EUR 45 million, it is Paulig’s largest investment outside of Finland.

Seizing opportunities

The new Flanders-based factory produces tortillas for the Santa Maria and Poco Loco brands as well as for private labels. “With this EUR 45 million investment, we are securing future growth and consolidating our position as the European market leader in the Tex Mex segment,” says Paulig CEO Rolf Ladau. “This segment is experiencing rapid growth in Europe. And thanks to our new tortilla plant in Roeselare, we can seize the many opportunities that are arising.”

We aim to double our Tex Mex production in Europe. Our new factory in Flanders plays a crucial role in this ambition while also offering innovation opportunities.

Fresh talent

Equipped with three state-of-the-art production lines, the new tortilla factory also allows for the production of both wheat-free and gluten-free tortillas. It is estimated that the new factory will create over 60 new jobs in the region.

“We are mainly recruiting operators, technicians, team leaders and warehouse workers,” says Arnauld Demoulin, SVP Business Area Customer Brands at Paulig. “But we are also looking for colleagues for other departments to help support growth. Our objective is to bake even more tortillas for customers all over Europe, not just for our house brands Poco Loco and Santa Maria but also for private labels.”

Carbon neutral factory

The new Flanders-based factory is Paulig’s eleventh plant. The facility has achieved the CarbonNeutral® certification provided by Climate Impact Partners to companies that prioritize sustainability by striving toward carbon neutrality. By 2030, Paulig aims to become an industry leader in sustainability.
