Evonik (Germany) to build new plant in Antwerp (Flanders)

German chemical concern Evonik will be building the world’s first production plant of a new type of methionine in Antwerp, Flanders. The aim is to make shrimp aquaculture more efficient and sustainable. Evonik plans to invest between EUR 10 and 50 million.

Evonik in Flanders
Over the past ten years, Evonik has continually expanded its facilities in Antwerp. Altogether, the company has invested over EUR 500 million in production and an additional EUR 350 million in installations. In this way, Evonik boosted its production of butadiene (used for synthetic rubber), MBTE (a lead replacer in fuels) and methionine (an animal feed additive).

Growth perspectives in aquaculture
The Antwerp site is expanding to do research on AQUAVI® Met-Met, a new type of methionine specially developed for shrimp and other crustaceans. “Due to demographic growth and overfishing in our oceans, the aquaculture market is growing at six per cent per year, faster than other segment of animal production,” explains Frank Daman, General Manager Evonik Antwerp. “The plant is scheduled to become operational from mid-2016 onwards.”

Flanders’ Port and technology
“Methionine is one of Evonik’s star products. Our strategic location close to the port and widely recognized expertise in technology, make us an attractive partner. Thanks to the extra investments, we have the honor to call ourselves the biggest methionine plant worldwide,” Daman concluded.
