European Commission ranks Flanders as a ‘strong innovator’

The 2019 European Innovation Scoreboard recognizes Belgium and Flanders as ‘strong innovators’ within Europe. When it comes to linkages, our region’s strong clusters, including one of the largest chemical clusters in the world, make us the perfect breeding ground for collaborative innovation. Overall, Belgium was ranked 6th, while Flanders was ranked 40th out of 238 regions on the Regional Innovation Scoreboard.

Playing to our strengths

Belgium – and Flanders as its northern region – excel in 4 areas:

  • Linkages: thanks to Flanders’ deep-rooted cluster policy, the public, private and academic sectors can quickly and efficiently work together, enabling innovation in the region as a whole.
  • Corporate investments: as a region, Flanders invested a record amount in R&D and innovation, which inspires companies to do the same.
  • Innovative SMEs: Since Flanders and Belgium are known for their start-up scene, particularly in biotechnology and IT, it’s no surprise that we’re pioneers when it comes to stimulating innovation in smaller companies.
  • Attractive research systems: Flanders is home to several world-renowned research centers, such as imec, VIB and VITO.

About the European Innovation Scoreboard

The European Innovation Scoreboard ranks all EU member states and a number of non-EU countries – as well as their individual regions – according to their innovative strengths. They are pitted against the European average and divided into four categories:

  • innovation leaders (group of countries with performance >120% of the European average)
  • strong innovators (between 90% and 120% of the European average)
  • moderate innovators (between 50% and 90%)
  • modest innovators (<50%)

Belgium is situated in the group of "strong innovators" and ranked sixth overall in the EU.

About Belgium and Flanders
