Dutch manufacturer Brabantia expands its Flanders factory

Following an earlier investment in 2016, Dutch home goods manufacturer Brabantia is investing an additional EUR 14 million in its factory in Pelt, Flanders. “The site is known as the core of our Dutch family business,” says CEO Tijn Van Elderen. “Since May 2020, our sales have increased by 50%.” All in all, Brabantia is counting on a growth of 25% in 2020 and is set to exceed a turnover of EUR 140 million – a record.

The most important factory of the group

That sales rush is also felt in Pelt, where Brabantia has been operating a factory for almost 60 years. In addition to garbage cans, bread tins and storage boxes also roll off the production line. The factory is the most important of the group and features an adjacent global distribution center.

With this distribution center, Brabantia joins a long list of companies that chose Flanders as their logistics hub: Barry Callebaut (Switzerland), Becton Dickinson (US) and Nike (US) are just a few examples.

We are investing in Pelt, our most important site, to keep up with the times.

To keep up with demand, Brabantia is hiring personnel and has ordered new machines. In 2021, Brabantia will invest EUR 4 million in Pelt, and another EUR 10 million in the next two years. These investments will go towards new software and shelving in the distribution center, new products, and production automation.

Tijn Van Elderen: “We are taking big steps with sensors and collaborative robots, or cobots. We already use eight of them at points in the production process where the human body would otherwise suffer from repetitive torsional movements.”
