Brussels, a leader in cost-effectiveness

Brussels, capital city of Flanders and Belgium, has retained its position as one of the most cost-effective cities in the European Union (EU) based on a recent cost of living survey of world capitals.

The strength of the euro combined with some economic recession in the EU saw all EU capitals rise dramatically on the cost of living index, which is compiled annually by Mercer Human Resource Consulting.

While Tokyo and Moscow were the world’s most expensive cities globally, London rose to seventh most expensive, Rome to 48th, Paris to 23rd, Amsterdam to 52nd, Berlin to 58th, and Brussels to 68th.

The index uses New York as a base with 100 points and covers the relative costs of some 200 items of daily living in 144 cities around the world.
