“Just shy of the top ranking is the Port of Antwerp,” PTI reports in its article entitled ‘Top 5 Ports in Europe 2021’. The port, which has since merged with the Zeebrugge area, reportedly processed over 12 million TEU in 2021, despite facing several disruptions in the global supply chain.
Thanks to the resilience and world-renowned qualities of our port community, we have returned to the 2019 pre-COVID levels after barely a year.
Furthermore, the PTI article goes on to praise the strategic location and accessibility of both the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and the region of Flanders:
Located in Flanders, the seaport is in the heart of Europe and easily accessible by major vessels.
Highlighting just one of the innovative initiatives that have taken place at the port recently, PTI mentioned the partnership with Sabca, a French company that chose DronePort (Flanders) as the location for its drone activities. “Back in October 2021,” the article reads, “Antwerp partnered with aerospace company Sabca to conduct field trials of a fixed-wing drone fitted with cameras to assess the technology’s potential in providing real-time on-site security imaging.”
In addition to the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Flanders’ seaports also include North Sea Port Ghent and the Port of Ostend. While the first is known as one of Europe’s leading biotech and biobased clusters, the latter is a major hub for construction and maintenance of offshore wind farms in the North Sea.
