The updated ranking, which is based on throughput rates, also reconfirms the Port of Antwerp’s status as Europe’s second-largest international port – leading well before critical competitors such as Hamburg (Germany), Valencia (Spain), Felixstowe (UK), Le Havre (France), London (UK) and Barcelona (Spain).

Antwerp among the world’s top container ports
The Port of Antwerp – the largest of Flanders’ four seaports – has maintained its excellent position at #14 in the world’s top 100 container ports: a ranking published on 30 October 2017 by Lloyd’s List. The global leader in shipping news and intelligence highlighted, among other things, how the Port of Antwerp “once again achieved growth levels among Europe’s elite box ports.”
In addition, thanks to its continuing growth, the Port of Antwerp has also closed the gap with Europe’s biggest container port, Rotterdam, even further. In 2016, 10.04 million containers passed through the Port of Antwerp, compared to 12.38 million in Rotterdam.
