3D Systems has acquired its Flanders-based sector peer LayerWise for an unknown amount. Based in the US, 3D Systems now owns 100% of the equity. Peter Mercelis and Jonas Van Vaerenbergh remain the CEOs of LayerWise.
LayerWise started as a spin-off of the KULeuven university in 2008. The company became successful very quickly thanks to its medical solutions: their products are used, for instance, to replace pieces of the skull.
Two years ago, the university of Hasselt in Flanders got a world scoop when they operated on a woman, replacing an entire mandible with one that was printed by LayerWise.
LayerWise also produces metal parts for industrial players, such as The European Space Agency ESA and lighting manufacturer Sylvania. (reported by De Tijd newspaper)
