All Flemish local authorities are on the Internet

By 1 January 2003, the local authorities of all 308 Flemish towns had their own website on the Internet. In the summer of 2002 as few as 200 authorities were operational on the net, but since then the remainder have taken advantage of the Flemish government’s “Flanders Online” programme, which offers a standard web-package.

All 308 towns can now be reached via the address www.vlaanderen.be/gemeenten, where you can click on the town of your choice.

The sites of a small number of towns are limited to a home page or “front door”: the “building” behind this door still needs to be constructed – a task which is scheduled for completion by 20 February 2003.

The fact that all Flemish towns are now online is not only useful and interesting, but also important. Particularly significant is the linking of the local authority websites to the Internet sites of the five Flemish provinces and the Flanders Regional Administration. This is a first major step along the road to integrated e-government.
