Agio invests 15 million euro in new factory in Westerlo
Agio is based in the Dutch town of Duizel and is one of the leading cigar manufacturers in West Europe. Each year it produces some 700 million cigars, including brand names such as Agio, Panter, Balmoral and De Huifkar. The Agio plant at Geel was opened in the 1960’s and is specialised in the mixing of the tobacco filling and the manufacture of the end product. These activities will now be transferred to Westerlo, where the very latest state-of-the-art machinery is available. This will allow Agio to respond flexibly to any changes in the European cigar market.
According to spokesman Youry Harvey Bredewold, the Westerlo factory will employ an additional 35 staff, as well as absorbing the Geel workforce. The new production facility was formally opened yesterday by Ad Wintermans, Agio’s Managing Director. The group has almost 3,500 employees worldwide and is good for an annual turnover of 90 million euro. Its cigars are exported to more than 100 countries.
