Expat status for foreign executives and researchers in Flanders

Does your company employ foreign executives and/or researchers temporarily assigned to Belgium and Flanders as a region? Great news: they can benefit from a special expat tax status, including tax-free expat allowances tax-free reimbursement of specific costs and more.

Significant reductions in employment costs

As an employer of expats in Flanders, you can obtain significant reductions in employment cost as your employees benefit from a special expat tax status. This includes the following benefits:

  • tax-free expatriate allowances to cover the costs of living and housing, tax equalization, etc. This allowance can reach up to EUR 11,250 per year at operational entities in Flanders, and EUR 29,750 per year at HQs and R&D centers.
  • unlimited tax reimbursement of non-repetitive expenses including installation costs, moving expenses, school fees, etc.
  • tax-free treatment of days worked outside of Belgium.

Furthermore, foreign executives are considered non-residents for Belgian income tax purposes, meaning that they are only taxed on their Belgian-source income.
