The inland waterway network of Flanders

Because it’s connected to Europe’s most important markets, Flanders is the starting point for major freight transport via inland waterways. The river and canal network of Flanders is one of the densest in the world, extending over 1,357 kilometers.

Major waterway infrastructure projects

Several large projects were initiated in 2015 to expand the inland waterway network of Flanders, including:

  • Seine-Scheldt Project – the opening-up of the canals and logistical zones of Bossuit-Kortrijk and Roeselare-Lys.
  • DistryCity Project – a research project examining how inland waterways play a role in urban logistics and distribution.
  • Redevelopment of the Brownfield site of Willebroek-Noord – the strengthening of the logistical hotspot between Antwerp and Brussels.
  • Terneuzen Lock Project – a collaboration between the Netherlans and Flanders aiming to improve shipping access to the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal and the ports of Ghent and Terneuzen (North Sea Port).
