The taxes on import of pork meat, as well as milk products such as sour cream and cheese, from the EU were abolished on December 29, whereas taxes on import of domestic pigs weighing up to 50 kilograms, are abolished on December 31, states the amendment to the decision on defining agricultural and food products for which special charges are paid in import and defining the amount of the special charges.

The Government of Serbia implemented the import taxes in 2015 in order to prevent disturbances in the market, and the decision was made in the context of the abolition of quotas for the production of milk in the EU, and the Russian ban on import of agricultural products from the EU, which had created a surplus in the European market.

The taxes were extended several times, whereas those on certain types of sour cream were abolished in the meantime.

The import taxes equaled RSD 10-20 per liter of milk and RSD 10-30 for sour milk products.

The European Union requested the abolition of these protective measures from Serbia several times, deeming them to be in violation of the Stabilization and Association Agreement.
