Nizhny Novgorod hosted Russia’s first Global City Hackathon

Nizhny Novgorod, one of the largest industrial and economic regions of European Russia, hosted Russia’s first Global City Hackathon on April 19-21, 2019. The event is an initiative by the World Economic Forum for Russia, targeted at development and implementation of technological solutions for a modern city.

During the 3-day marathon, about 200 experts from Russia and other countries took part in developing IT-related service prototypes and solutions for most kinds of municipal activities, from smart planning through digitalization, to efficient implementation and complete evaluation. The winner projects will be fine-tuned together with experts specializing on smart-city issues in Amsterdam, Barcelona and Lyon, to be later adopted by Nizhny Novgorod and recommended to other Russian municipalities targeting smart solutions for their daily operations and development strategies.

Nizhny Novgorod is the administrative centre of the Privolzhsky (Near-the-Volga river) Federal District of Russia, located ca. 400 km east of Moscow. The District unites 14 regions and republics with the population of 29,4 million inhabitants (Russia’s 20%), however holding only about 6% of the Russian territory. Industrial production, agriculture, transport/logistics and tourism are the main economic sectors of the District.
