2020 - Restart in Romania's infrastructure projects

2020 could be a turning point in Romania's infrastructure development. According to an article of business-review.eu, a high number of contracts for motorways and express roads have already been signed, and the state company CNAIR is preparing more major contracts for this year.

With only 866 km of motorway Romania ranks poor among other European countries. However 2020 already records significant changes. Currently 164 km of motorways and expressway are under construction and at least 40 km will be completed this year. The process of project implementation has eased and became less bureaucratic.

While many economic sectors have experienced sharp declines due to the restrictions in the context of the new coronavirus, contruction works in Romania have continued at fast speed.

According to the data released by the National Institute of Statistics, Romania's GDP rose by 2.7% in the first quarter of 2020, construction being the sector that contributed the most to this growth.

Infrastructure projects have a high potential to bring a boost to a declining economy, expecially since many projects are financed through European funds.
