UPS (US) takes distribution to new heights in Flanders

In 2016, the United Parcel Service (UPS) announced an investment of EUR 4 million in a new distribution center in Lummen, Flanders. The facility will be a major addition to the American package delivery company’s 8 sites – including its European HQ – in Belgium and Flanders as a region. The investment earned UPS a nomination for Foreign Investment of the Year at the Foreign Investment Trophy 2017.

“UPS has a broad portfolio of services and solutions in transportation, from small-scale like packages to large-scale like freight,” says Karl Haberkorn, Managing Director UPS Belgium & Luxembourg. “We are a financially stable, reliable partner with a global presence and a unique business model thanks to our integrated ground-to-air network. Nobody else has this capability.”

Meeting growing consumer demand

“To capitalize further on our business requisites, UPS is building a new distribution facility in Lummen,” Karl Haberkorn continues. “The facility will be 6,000 m2. Inside, we’ll have space for about 84 package cars. Outside, we’ll have doors for 23 trucks and a belt system to process up to 5,000 packages per hour.”

“This investment is a response to the upswing in e-commerce and the rise in consumer demand for package delivery,” Karl Haberkorn adds. “People and companies are now buying and selling globally. Flanders is a logistics hub in Europe, ranks in the top 10 of the Logistics Performance Index, and is ideally situated between the big economies of Germany, France and the UK. In short, we chose Lummen because it’s a good spot to connect with the world in a much better way.”
