Boortmalt builds world’s largest malt factory in Flanders

Operating under the wings of French agro-industrial cooperative Axéréal, Boortmalt's malt factory in Antwerp will soon be expanded to include a 4th location. Bringing the site's total capacity to an impressive 470,000 tons, the investment will turn the Boortmalt site into the world's largest malt factory.

Investing in capacity and research

Not only will Axéréal expand the capacity of its Boortmalt site in Antwerp, a research facility for the entire group will be added and 15 new employees will be hired as well. Their roles will be to investigate how the production process can be aligned with local products like Africa's cassava. Construction should be finished by July 2018.

Increased demand

The expansion is mainly prompted by the increased demand from South America, Africa and Asia, served by Boortmalt in Antwerp. Boortmalt is currently Europe’s second-largest malt producer and the fifth-largest of its kind around the globe. From its 10 production sites in Europe, the malt producer supplies to customers worldwide: 50% of its sales volume is generated in developing markets outside of Europe.
